WATER ACCESS IN AFRICA

Conservatism is not about leaving people behind. Conservatism is about empowering people to catch up, to give them the tools at their disposable that make it possible for them to access all the hope, all the promise, all the opportunity that America offers.

- Marco Rubio
Africa...A country in need of opportunities.

The country of Africa is desperately in need of accessible water. For instance, one international organization, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, also known as the UNDESA reports that “in Sub Saharan Africa, 45% of the population used shared or unimproved facilities thus resulting in 25% of those residents practicing open defecation” (UNICEF, 2012). More importantly with increased access to water the UNDESA predicts that over some 2 million children would survive each year. Ultimately, such an affect would leave huge savings in health care costs and in time would influential factor in educated children and the African society at large.

I really like the topic you've picked for this blog and you've set up your page quite nicely. I personally like the videos ever since I started dabbling in videography myself. Anyway, I'm currently blogging about natural disasters that affect Haiti. Since the massive earthquake in 2010 living conditions in the impoverished country haven't improved much. Cholera runs rampant through the shelters from unclean water and improper disposal of wastes and many have died in the displacement camps alone. I'm wondering if you've ever heard of Chitosan? I've done some research on it as a as a dietary supplement, but originally it was created as a source to clean water. It would attract and bind to oils and dangerous particles in the water that would form a filmy scum layer on the top. Once the scum was removed the water was drinkable. I'd be interested if this product would be a practical tool in purifying water in countries without access to clean water.
